Here at the Tunaweza Children’s Centre, we are interested in connecting our families and their children with experienced professionals in the fields of special education, physical, occupational, and speech and language therapies, and counseling
At Tunaweza we use a multi-disciplinary approach to assess and
identify the needs of the child and develop an individualised
treatment plan.
Our physiotherapists examine, evaluate and create physical interventions for children who require physical improvement. It is their goal to assist each child in reaching their full potential by implementing physical interventions including:
movement exercise, stretching, stabilization, coordination, balance and endurance.
At Tunaweza, our Speech Language Therapists aim to assess and treat speech, language and communication issues in order for our children to communicate to their level. Speech and language therapy focuses on the production and use of speech, difficulty in understanding and/or using language, communication and feeding, chewing and swallowing.
Our Occupational Therapists work closely with children to assist them in becoming proficient in activities of daily living.
Our team of music therapists engages children in interventions
including active music making (playing instruments, vocalizing), active listening, song writing and song learning. This helps to trigger various benefits including; cognition, attention/listening, social interaction, motor coordination and speech and language. Music also motivates children to participate physically, focuses children and encourages non-verbal and verbal self-expression.
The special education department targets learners with special
abilities and aims at providing adjusted quality education to all children at the centre. With our differentiated learning approach, our special needs instructors work with children with impairments or disabilities, beginning from where the learners are; not necessarily what the curriculum demands. The children are grouped according to ability and the instructors build on what the children know, allowing multiple learning styles to be engaged.
Each client is encouraged to use multiple forms of creative
expression to articulate their inner world, including drawing and painting, photography, sculptures using a range of materials from clay to paper mâché.
Our child and family support team aims at encouraging children to develop a positive attitude towards life, recognize their strengths and express themselves through verbal and non-verbal
communication. It addresses a number of issues including; family relationships, bullying, bereavement/loss, and emotional and behavioral issues. Tunaweza offers both individual and family
therapy services.
Tunaweza also provides outreach programs in homes and communities while working with community based rehabilitators for those who are unable to commute to the centre on a regular basis. The centre also reaches out to schools and other learning centres where their students have enrolled as a way of integrating them in the new systems(Inclusion).
The Tunaweza Children’s Centre follows a holistic approach to serving children with special needs. We believe in providing our children and their families with dignity, respect, justice, excellence, and independence.
